What is urge surfing?

Urge surfing is a way of noticing an urge without immediately acting on it. The goal is not to force the feeling away. It is to observe what is happening, create a little space, and choose what to do next.

Why do urges feel like waves?

Some urges rise and fall quickly. Others last longer or return. The useful part of the wave metaphor is remembering that feelings and sensations can change over time — not that every craving is guaranteed to peak and vanish.

What if the urge doesn't go away?

The goal is not to “win” against the urge. If it stays strong, you can try another strategy, contact someone, change your surroundings, or use additional support.

Is urge surfing treatment?

No. Steadiora provides peer-support, educational, and self-guided tools. It is not medical treatment, detoxification, psychotherapy, or emergency care.

The steps, in words

  1. 1. Notice where in your body you feel the urge.
  2. 2. Find a word or two for the sensation.
  3. 3. Rate how strong it feels from 0 to 10.
  4. 4. Choose one strategy — breathing, grounding, moving, delaying, or reaching out.
  5. 5. Practise it for a few minutes.
  6. 6. Check the intensity again. Lower, the same, or higher are all valid.
  7. 7. Choose one next safe step.

Questions people ask

What is urge surfing?
Urge surfing is a way of noticing an urge without immediately acting on it. Instead of forcing the feeling away, you observe what is happening in your body, create a little space, and then choose what to do next.
How long should I urge surf?
There is no required length. Many people use a few minutes. This exercise takes roughly three to ten minutes depending on the strategy you choose, and you can stop or repeat it at any point.
What if my craving gets stronger?
That happens, and it does not mean the exercise failed. You can try a different strategy, contact someone you trust, change your surroundings, or open Support for more help.
Does urge surfing make cravings disappear?
Not always. Some urges rise and fall quickly, others last longer or come back. Urge surfing is a way to create space between the urge and what you do next, not a guarantee that the feeling will end.
Can I use urge surfing for alcohol cravings?
Yes, people use it for alcohol and other substances. It is a self-guided coping practice, not medical care, and it is not a substitute for treatment or medically supervised withdrawal.
Can I use it for other urges?
Yes. The same steps are commonly used for gambling, self-harm urges, compulsive scrolling, or any impulse you want a moment of space around.
Do I need an account to use this?
No. The exercise runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you select is saved, sent, or shared, and no sign-up or email is required.
Is Steadiora free?
Yes. Steadiora is free, and this tool is free to use without an account. Steadiora provides peer-support, educational, and self-guided tools rather than medical treatment.
